Wood Turners finish

I finally decided to try the stuff I got from the MAPG. I shook the bottle for about a minute. Is it suppose to come out like water or is it suppose to be like a paste wax?

It is very thin. Needs a lot of coats to build up.

I'm finding that I need to use a good 7-8 coats on most woods. If you have an open grain, a coat or two of thin CA will help before the WTF.

Once the last coat is applied, stand it aside somewhere to completely dry overnight. Then come back and put a coat of wax over the top, buff it out and you should be good.

CA will do that by itself, at least my finishes with CA do!

I used wtf on marble wood and had to sand it back 3 times because I kept getting little cracks in it before I could put 4-5 coats on. Finally gave up and used CA. I put on thin coats and waited 5-7 min between coats but couldn't get it to stop. Anyone have any ideas?

Tried it and found all the coats required and the waiting time was not worth it for pens.

Finish was not as good as CA. If you are allergic to CA it is a possibility.

I don't use it for pens, but it is great on other turnings.

I use both CA and GFWTF... they give look and different feel. Hard to explain, but I'll try. I thought it might be me, so I took 2 halves of the same blank and made Sierras out of them. GFWTF had a "warmth" and more natural but polished feeling to it. The CA had a very high gloss but more plastic-y look and feel. You could build up the GFWTF to a very high "deep" polish, but I think you lose the reason for using it, IMHO. I'll pick and choose based on what I want out of a blank. Some blanks look good with a "furniture like" finish, others do better with an "luxury" finish. Just my observations - your mileage may vary.

I think Rob summed it up nicely. I haven't used WTF on a pen yet, but I did do a comparison between WTF & CA on 2 halves of the same blank and came to the same conclusion.

It is thin and as others have said does take some coats to build up. I do like it but I've recently done some testing with 'ob shine juice' http://eddiecastelin.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/shinejuice.54184110.pdf

I've found this to work just as well and it has a higher gloss finish. I've been working more with spindles and bowls though, haven't really tested either on pens.
