I need some American Holly, blackwood, and walnut - but I need planks 8"-12" wide and 8"-24" in length (grain running the length of the board). I need probably 2 or 3 BF of each.

anyone know of a good source? I've got a couple exotic lumber yards in Houston, but I think they won't want to cut a longer board to sell a small quantity.

Did you try Clarks in the Heights? I know they cut to suit. I have purchased a good bit of Poplar and such but they have finer woods too. From what I understand they will cut but have a limit to how short they will leave a board. They also have a table scattered w/ smaller pieces.

Clark's Hardwood Lumber Co.

There is also Houston Hardwoods off 290 and 34th I think. I dont know about their policies though as I just bought Stair treds from there. I cant imagine they will not cut it and force someone to buy a 8' board when they only need 2'

I'm going to run by Clark's tomorrow - but like you said, they have a limit to how short they'll leave a piece in the yard.

I checked out Gilmer's site - neat stuff

I'd rather not say what the project is - as I've never seen a picture of one...but that is cool!
