I am looking at getting a couple wood river planes. I was wondering if folks here might have used them and have some first hand opinions, especially about initial tuning and how well the blade holds an edge.

I have read the fine woodworking review of planes

I know they are made in China (So was my JET lathe)

I know they are copies of a Stanley Bailey design (Patent expired a while ago) as are the Lie-Nelson. I don't want to rehab an old plane yet.

So I know what has been written about them. I know I cannot afford nor can I Justify a Lie-Nelson. Can't Justify one of THESE either, but they sure make Lie-Nelson look like low priced junk. I just want to know how the wood river feel from people who use them.

I can't speak to the quality of the Wood River planes but their router bits stink.
If you don't mind I'd like to recommend Veritas planes, sold at Lee Valley.
I have several and they are hands down the best engineered planes I have ever used. Some planes are VERY hard to adjust but Veritas put alot of thought into the design and they are SUPER easy to adjust. They are not as cheap as Wood River but not as high as Lie-Nielsen. They're made in Canada and in my opinion you won't find a better product for the money.

Wood River and Lie Nielsen planes are based on the Stanley
Bedrock plane. The Bedrock plane frog is adjustable without removing the plane iron. also the side plates on the Bedrock are flat on top instead of round. The Wood River planes look to be excellent. Were I to buy one, I would check the sole for flatness and the sides for square.

the wood river planes i bought have served me well and would recamend them. lightly honed them out of the box sole was flat and good to go.
