I'm a new pen turner and member of the IAP so please pardon any "duh" questions. Can anyone recommend (if it exists) a reference to the types of woods that are used in pen turning? I am intending on give some pens as gifts for Christmas and I'd like to include a small info card about the wood used. I realize I can go on like each time for a description but I was hoping there would be a consolidated reference I could use. Thanks again for any assistance.

I would try http://www.cookwoods.com/lumber-site/ or www.wikipedia.org. Many wood dealers also have information on their sites about the wood they sell.

When having trouble, I do a search on the type of wood. Also, I once thought people would be as interested in the wood as I was, but most of them just like a beautiful pen. The name of the wood is about all they are interested in.

Library, library, library, > Materials there is a compilation of materials by teh IAP members checkit out and see if what your looking for is there.

THANK YOU!!! The Wood Database is exactly what I was searching for. I also see they're planning a printed version. Thanks again.

THANKS ALSO for the Cook Woods site recommendation. They have little extras that the database doesn't and I should be able to combine info for a nice descriptive. I appreciate the library suggestion as "time is tight" right now I will keep that resource in reserve.
