While visiting my daughter in FL I saw some wood piled on the side of the road. It was an orangish color with tinges of pink. I picked up a few pieces. Any one know what the wood is? Any problems I should be aware of? Thanks William

I would guess some kind of citrus. Wayne's suggestion of orange or grapefruit sounds reasonable to me.

For me, it looks a fruit tree of some nature, I have had many fruit trees that produce that orange(ish) colour on the fresh cuts, that is oxidation from air exposure so, it could be one of a few possibilities...!

I would have a good look close and around that wood was for, a tree still standing that, would resemble what you have there, you may find you answer that way...!

Good luck,

Cheers

american beech
where did it come from?

I found the wood on the side of the road in FL. I asked the owner of the house what kind of wood it was but he did not know.

robutacion The tree was from a yard and either decoration or used for shade. If it produced fruit I think the owner would have known what it was.

It could still be a fruit tree of some kind. Some special hybrids are developed just for decorative purposes rather than fruit production - such as the Bradford Pear and we have a fruitless mulberry in our yard.

Beech may be correct . It is fairly easy to identify by its rays . I hope the log ends were sealed immediately after you picked them up . I suspect Cottonwood is more than a bit drier than wherever in FL you picked them up .
