I got first in opportunity on the accumulated wood stash of a deceased turner. His son wants to see the turning continue.

I talked him up (yes you read that right) to $160. He wanted leas. Said it will just go in the offering plate tomorrow anyway.

There are 8' boards on the bottom in back that were mine already. All the rest came home today. Lots of 2" square spindles by 6" and 12 long. Bit chunks of Bocote. And much more. Mostly exotics. Some domestic.

you obviously impressed him as someone who would appreciate this and who would use them for the best possible means.

I know I have had some things that had no real meaning to me that I gave away or sold at a really great price because I knew that the new owner would really appreciate it and get the use out of it. In fact I did that just today when I sold a guy a camera lens for $35 which should have been worth at least $100 but he is one of those who helps others and also would appreciate it. When he asked, you only want $35 I knew he was the right one to get it.

I am sure that is the same way your seller was.

already offered but he said he has more turnings that his dad actually made then he knows what do do with.

I'm going to finish a half turned bowl and give it to the friend of the family who gave me the lead. Wife's coworker.
 
Just because it's casual conversation. :-)

A few interesting things about this guy as a turner.

One of his last projects as a chess set using inside out technique. Snapped a quick pic of a couple pieces.

Also one of his major projects was to make eggs out of as many species as he could get - mainly as a way to show off different woods and their grain - side and end grain. He did 1100 different woods before he passed away.

Also, he made a treadle lathe from scratch out of wood with metal where necessary. Very cool to see.

much different than a kid here in Houston that inherited a bunch of pen blanks from his uncle and was thinking he was going to sell them at or near retail price. still spent a bunch of money with him though. :biggrin:
 
Great find Dan & great deal offering him more than he wanted. Good deeds like that always pay off down the road.
 
I like those "inside out" chessmen ! Looks like oak on the left (white knight, I think). Do you know what wood he made the black piece out of ?
 
You were very lucky to have acquired such a great treasure trove of wood. Bet you won't have to buy any wood for some time to come.

You know I still will. Haha. Not exotic wood spindles though.

He really didn't have much burl wood at all. Still need some of that. :-)

In all seriousness though, I do feel extremely fortunate. And I even managed to leave a little behind for the next guy coming through. Not much though. :-)

This guy was not a pen turner. The only pen sized blanks were these - cocobolo, Bocote and either zebra or marble wood. They are a full 1" square and he used them for letter openers. One piece blade out of wood and all.
