Cracks, usually parallel with the grain.

You might have to look close to see them. I had a piece of Ebony that looked good, until I looked real close at the end grain. Very small cracks. (I think I might have found them in time.[?])

Some woods (from what I've heard) are more prone to checking than others. I'm sure more people, more experianced, will respond.
