I bought a couple of these a while back. They work pretty good for me. Got'em off ebay. Not big and fancy and reasonably

On the subject of the woodburning decoration of pen blanks .... what would be the best woods to use ?

Please be as specific as possible when recommending the wood species. . Thanks.

Maple, aspen, holly and woods that are light colored and soft. But you can burn just about any wood if you have a good burner.

Easier to define what you probably don`t want to use Mal
1) Most or all of the fancy blanks you buy
2) Ring porous woods like oaks and hickories
3) Sapwood/heartwood boundaries
4) Woods with strong early/latewood boundaries

Even within the good species John suggests , you can find unsuitable pieces . If you think something is far to plain for a pen , it may work . I like paper birch .
