I hope this does not cross any political lines. But I seriously do not know what this word means in today's society. To me it means I just got up from sleeping and can carry on for another day.;) When did this all happen and why is this being used so much today? Is this a good thing or bad thing? Can someone explain what Woke means?

It's just another label that one side puts on another, much like bigot or any number of labels. It's a lot easier now to broad brush everyone and point out why they are different than it is to look at everyone as an individual and see how much we have in common.

Well, I am woke but in about 15 minutes I will be asleep, take care all.

Woke began as a slang for being aware of social injustices. This was back in the 70's and 80's. It is an ever evolving term as most Urbanisms are. There is a good article on the word's history here (I know, it's a news web site some dont like.....dont be woke just read the article for what it is). They sum it up in a nutshell with this statement:
"But the meaning of woke evolved again with the rise of "cancel culture" -- as the two terms saw increased use, they became intertwined in the public consciousness. Often, someone gets canceled after they say something insensitive – something not woke.
So in addition to meaning aware and progressive, many people now interpret woke to be a way to describe people who would rather silence their critics than listen to them."

Woke is a term that typically encapsulates those who are further left on the liberal/conservative scale. Usually it refers to those groups who embrace cancel culture, progressivism, socialism in various forms, transgenderism, more government power, etc.

Not sure how this term was created exactly but it certinnly has become a very common piece of verancular over the last 18 or so months. It is complementary but at the same time isn't an insult per say either.

I would argue that it's not indicative of those who embrace cancel culture, as my experience both sides embrace cancel culture equally, and would also object to the socialism part. It started as being aware of social injustices based on race. Now it's more of a catch all phrase for anything democrats want or anything republican don't want.

Any person, business or corporation that is "woke" allows their "feelings" to rule their lives.
The left uses words like "racist" or "Nazi" to emote "feelings" with the people they argue with in order to shut them up.
Basically, "Woke" persons, businesses and corporations bow down to the will of the leftists because they're afraid of being called names, i.e. they are weak or lacking character.

It is more referred to now as a new generation that gets their feelings hurt easily. Instead of coinciding in a population of people with different beliefs, they would rather have everyone believe in what they believe in.

I want to thank all that replied and did it in a manner that did not create a firestorm here. I kind of thought this was a political thing and hesitated about asking. I have a little better understanding of the word which I was basically interested in. How it is used today seems to be varied but that is for those that do use it. I am hearing this term used more and more today and it was just something I thought I would try to get an interpretation of. If it has been around as long as one member said I must still have been asleep. I realize new catch phrases and acronyms are born everyday from all cultures and walks of life but sometimes it is hard to keep up with when you start getting up in age.o_O I can honestly say I will not ever be using this term. :) Again thanks all and we will let this one die.

Someone who disagrees with a position of a company because it doesn't comport with their beliefs, stands outside in protest, and chooses not to use the services of that company is a "woke cancel culturalist".

Somebody who doesn't like something written in a book because it hurts their feelings, demands removal of the book from the school library, and wants legislation passed banning discussion of books containing similar content is not a "woke cancel culturalist" because...

I don't think being "woke" is necessarily bigotry. The right does use use the term woke to describe those they classify as part of the cancel culture, therefore it is an unflattering label coming from them. However the Left uses "woke" as a goal to be achieved for awareness of what they consider to be bad. So it depends on which side you are on.....

I believe Moke comes the closest here. Those who embrace "Woke" practices seem to find it as complimentary. Those who don't use the same term in a derogatory fashion. Really should be a win-win.

Kind of like growing up a Redneck or a Geek and just accepting that was who you are until you get out into a bigger world and realize some people think it is derogatory. - from a Redneck Geek. 👨‍🌾

Our dog saw some animal at 1:30 this morning, and woke us up. I was completely against it. Especially when she kept barking off & on.
I'm sticking with that definition and most days I'm all for being woke, actually favor it to not waking up. Timing was off today!
Earl
I use it a lot, like Alexa, woke me up a 7:30 am. Werks every time. I also use as in Alexa, cancel Culture Club when it starts to play. Never did care for them.

And for me, the term is the current warning signal that its time for me to find something useful to do in the kitchen because 'that' uncle is warming up to his annual Thanksgiving 'what's wrong with America today' monologue.

LOL you need to watch some old reruns of the TV show Mash. Harry Morgan played Colonel Sherman Potter. Horse Hockey was one of his comments for "bulloney".

I do believe Horse Feathers made an honorable appearance or two as well.

Have to say I see people are still posting to this question and to be honest with you all that replied I know no more than when I asked it. Still have no idea what you all are talking about. I hope whatever it is does not come back to bite us all in the end.

Well, that was a well spent half hour. I'm going to be re-using this line a lot - like every time someone posts a gorgeously segmented pen that I'm not able to do myself (yet).

"Listen, it's too big a world to be in competition with everybody else.
The only guy I have to get better than is who I am right now.

There are so many points to address here but I don't have the time.

I would like to ask, what is wrong with being "WOKE"?

I have a daughter who is lesbian. In fact, I am making their wedding rings. The only wish I have for her, her partner, and all of my kids is to be happy! however, there are some who wish to not let them. I accept them like I accept everyone. To me, it doesn't matter race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, or even political leanings. Treat them right.

Don't like abortion? Don't get one!
Don't like drag shows? DON'T GO TO ONE!
Don't you like guns? Don't get one!

It's the personal freedoms we all want.

I find I am "WOKE". why? Everyone should be treated the same, fairly, and properly.

LOL! I'm proud of this group. Fred and Ginger could not have danced around that subject any better than we just did.
