No longer confused....
This is a WIP I have going. Just another stage. Starting to core. Next up is tool fabrication to complete the coring. The core is 7 1/2" x 1 1/2", the main block is 10" x 3".

That is truly a beautiful chunk of wood! I bought several Amboyna burl bowl blanks from Woodturningz several years ago, but haven't been able to bring myself to turn one yet. Can't bear the thought of wasting so much of that gorgeous wood and I don't have a coring tool yet. But I'll get one before I cut into them.

Then please allow me to explain :)

A coring tool that you buy is set a specific way for a specific type of cut and quite expensive to boot. I think I have came up with a way to fix that.

First up we have the initial cut that I have made which is 2 photo's above. Next I was doing some conceptualizing and this seems quite viable. I took some wire that I have and bent it to fit in the curvature of the cut, which is 1 1/2" deep.

Essentially this will be be made from some type of drill rod, either A2, D2, S2, S12, 1095, O2, W1, W2 or something similar. I forge it to shape, heat treat it then sharpen the end to cut.

Once the chisel is in the groove at the base a simple rotating motion will perform the cut.

Slow and precise the name of this game. :)

Almost forgot,

Freddy Krueger's face ? Dunno about that but hey halloween just ended so....

Kevin Kronewitter, I browse wood vendors in my free time looking for that right block, sometimes it takes several years to find a good one, like this block for instance.

Hi Ed??
Interesting tool shape, it seems that you will have a scraper of some sort, judging by the shape, and if that is the case then have you thought about what will happen with the shavings?????????? Just a thought!
Bob.

Yes it basically would be a scraper. Just doing that 90 degree's turn it could be very problematic esp on binding. I am going to likely make 3-4+ different ones, the first will be a very short hook then a larger hook and so on. Clean out is also going to be a concern.

So far been very little shavings.

This stuff was super hard, about equal to that of bastogne walnut, which they name bastard walnut for a reason. The attempts that I made at doing the back cut did not work out that good due to clearance and lack of pressure so I decided to call it on coring and just finish it. This image is 400 grit sanded with abranet screen. Not a drop of finish on it yet.
