MS has now made Windows 10 a "recommended" update. I have Windows 7 and don't want to update. And, being in a rural area with very slow/poor Interest service the download would likely take several days. Is there a fool proof way to block the download when you have your Window Update setting for "Install Updates Automatically (recommended)"? Having the setting set to "Check for updates let me chose whether to download & install" requires constant monitoring.

I saw this article How to Block Windows 10 Upgrade Downloads If You're Not Ready For Them that shows how you can block the download. Will this work?

Thanks,

Wade

Doing what is is in the link will delay it. MS will repush those files over and over again. If you don't want to go to Win 10, there are two options.

1. Upgrade to Win 7 Enterprise (this version is not sold in stores, someone may have a copy for sale online)

2. Deal with the Win 10 alerts until July, when you will have to start paying to upgrade to Win 10.

I would just set it to download only if wanted. It will require a little nursing but should work.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I set it to download only important updates. The recommended and optional updates will be listed and I will have to sort through them manually and select the ones I want on a regular basis, until after July "freebie" Windows 10 offer is over.

Currently KB3035583 is the "update" that includes the Windows 10 updater, and the one you won't want to install if you don't want it. There's also a couple registry fixes to turn off downloading Windows OS updates

I turn off updates. You know, the one that says (Not recommended) :) When I decide to do updates, a snapshot backup of my machine is insurance that complete restore is just a few clicks and 30 minutes away. This is carry-over from the days when I managed several thousand PC's. We never updated any software /operating software until it was thoroughly tested and certified. Then we distributed the software via an in-house distribution system.

If anything goes wrong, I want a clear path back to oper-ability again.
Thanks for the KB info Dave....
