I use it because to protect the finish on both the blank and the metal parts. Butch will chime in and say it is the same thing as clear shoe polish and I can't argue with him. When I use up the can I have I probably go to the shoe polish.

You kind of answered your own question when you asked it.

"Why ren wax over a durable finish such as ca glue? "

Just like a car, you wax over the finish.

There are many reasons to put wax over any finish , protection from handling and fingerprints is one of the main reasons . It also conceals a less then perfect finish for a short time . The wax will fill in minor lines and scratches left by a mediocre sanding and polishing job , however wax is soft and will wear away quickly leaving the lines and scratches visible .
Paul is right about me saying that Renwax is nothing but an overpriced natural shoe polish . Kiwi (and other brands) natural shoe polish performs , looks and even smells the same as Renwax at a much cheaper price and is readily available at your local supermarket .
