VANCOUVER - A giant 800-year-old red cedar tree has been poached from a provincial park on southern Vancouver Island, but the culprits who repeatedly returned to the site to hack it down may never be brought to justice.

Torrance Coste of the Wilderness Committee said consistent budget cuts over the last decade mean park rangers rarely monitor remote sites such as the Carmanah-Walbran Provincial Park, from where the cedar was chopped.

Well it wasnt some redneck with a pickup truck. Whoever took had heavy equipment, very heavy. Thats a large load to move out of there. Looks like a shady logging company.

Every black walnut on my grandma's farm was poached. Tree poachers are jerks.

Probably already on a ship headed to Asia. Big, old-growth logs are in high demand there.

Sucks to see the big one come down, especially by poachers. Hope they catch the thieves.

I wonder if Asia gets any of our bug like we get theirs.

I heard about a bristlecone pine in Nevada that some folks were trying to determine how old it was so one of the guys cut it down. According to the rings it was over 4,000 years old (oldest in US).
