As part of my developing the processes for turning pens from stone, I discovered a very interesting fossil material - Coprolite. Coprolite is indeed petrified Dinosaur poop. Like petrified wood and dinosaur bones, Coprolite is considered a gem stone.

It makes a very attractive and interesting material for custom pens.

Here is the first Coprolite pen I made

So it is indeed possible to polish a turd!

It's more non-uniform that I would have expected, perhaps, as Tom suggested, due to a high-fiber diet !!

Rather more beautiful than I expected also !!!

You should maybe be careful who you tell all your secrets to !!

That may be the best looking turd I've ever seen. How's the smell ;) Seriously, that is a fine looking pen. Fit and finish look great.

Very nice!

I know that stone can be very problematic when trying to make pens . . . do you mind if I ask what stones you use for making pens?

Pretty much the same as you....anything up to mohs 7, or a bit more, that will take a polish and doesn't have any fractures is a good candidate. The possibilities are almost endless.

The cool thing about working in stone is you can use the cutoffs to make jewelry and other things.

Here is the rough Coprolite and some polished pieces from cutoffs in making the pen blank
