I just brought my Wife, Diane, home from the hospital. Yesterday she had a Total Ankle Replacement surgery. Her ankle had been deteriorating over the past year due to arthritis. Her doctor had been trained to do these and had done them in Colorado, but he was only approved to do them here in Idaho this summer. So this surgery yesterday was the first of this kind in our area.

She is doing good. She can't put weight on that foot for six weeks. But everything went well. I would be glad to answer any questions. And, as always, positive thoughts are always welcome!

Thanks!

Scott.

I didn't know they could replace an ankle. It must have been in bad shape and, painful. Glad to hear she came thru surgery successfully.

It amazes me what they can do now days! Please keep us updated on her progress.

I have one body part that doesn't work as well as it use to, I wonder when they are going to come up with a working replacement for that. (So is my wife!) Sorry, I shouldn't have written that.

Thanks for all the good wishes! She is doing really good, it's just hard to hop around on one foot, using a walker. She is now feeling muscles she hasn't used before!

Hi Dennis! The traditional treatment is to fuse the ankle, and that will generally leave you with a limp. It leaves that leg a little shorter and the ankle doesn't move. You can get an insert for your shoe that will even up the length of the leg, but you'll always walk different because the ankle doesn't bend.

That's why we went with the ankle replacement. They have only been done in the USA for about ten years. It will leave her leg the same length, and she'll have full range of motion in the ankle. The replacement we did was the STAR replacement. Google it, it's cool! Ask the doctor who is doing your knee what he thinks. Or there is a list of doctors on the STAR website.

Thanks again everybody!

According to our TV all you need is two claw-foot bath tubs so you guys can sit, holding hand and watching the sunset... oh, I think there's some kind of little pill involved too....:biggrin::biggrin:

Thoughts and Prayers, are with Diane and her Medical Team, and Support for you.
May the wishes of all your friends assist you and your good Lady, in the coming weeks.

EVIL Person... OK, yea your're right! No further comment needed!

Best wishes for a full recovery. My wife and I couldn't get into a claw foot tub if we had or wanted to, too high to climb over the edge, that is a big step into one of those. We old the little pill is a help if you don't fall asleep first. Those tubs are heavy would probably get hernia trying to move them so we could watch the sun rise but then we probably wouldn't wake in time. Might try watch the noon news:biggrin:

Glad to hear the surgery went well. We'll be praying for a full and speedy recovery & many years of pain-free walking.

I was surprised to see this thread resurface! A good surprise! I was looking down the list of threads to see who was posting, and it was like, Who is this guy who stole my user name? It was just me. ;-)

We're almost three months out from her surgery now. She is walking normal now without a brace or anything! She still has a bunch of physical therapy to go to build up her stamina, but it is nice to see her walk without pain. That is just so cool! I would say this has been a total success at this point. (Knock on wood). If your ankle is going south on you, I recommend you check this out.

Scott.
