What's this wood?

It is sort of oily and has a sweetish licorice smell when I turn it. The guy who gave it to me said he thought it might be teak, but as much teak as I have sanded and oiled in my life, none of it looked like this and I don't remember that smell. It is open grain like teak and has the silica that you sometimes find in teak.

Carole, It looks like a teak pen that I turned a while back. However, I don't remember the smell. It was one of my earlier pens. I do remember that it was a light weight wood and was easy to turn. Kirk.[8D]

Thanks, Kirk. Maybe it is. I am just used to the teak on boats which is darker with more red. It is about the same weight as walnut and turns very easily.
