What's This Wood ??? Secret Revealed at the Bottom

I picked up this wood at a local woodshow on the weekend and was wondering if anyone can tell what it is ? Slimline w/Antler CB.

I've got some crotch Black Walnut that looks just like that. I wouldn't put money on that as a identity though.

Are you sure it's not a dyed blank? Pretty but I've never seen anything like it and it's not in my wood book.

It looks like dyed curly popular or maple.

I would say dyed curly Maple or figured (possibly stabilized) Koa.

Wow, nice!!! Hmmmmm, I would say the wood type is "very, very Pretty"---sorry, that's my best guess!!

Well I guess if there were a prize for this , it would have to go to Gary and Jim .
It was an experiment that I tried because of a post regarding making a Red , White & Blue pen for the Freedom Pen effort . It's actually a piece of Curly Maple that was turned,sanded to 1200 then colored with a black "Magic Marker" then finish sanded with 1500 grit and a finish applied .
To-days effort is something that someone might want to try for a Freedon Pen . It's done the same way only using Red and Blue Magic Markers with an antler CB which gives you a Red , White and Blue pen .
I hope that gives someone some ideas for the project .
