We made it through the Tornadoes and aren't close to any rivers or streams so we were safe.. Until some time around 11:30 last night, a pond that's about two acres square maybe three, and was about 10 or 12 feet deep that used to be right behind the shopping center where my shop is broke through the side. I wondered where the water was coming from that was outside my front door. I opened thee door I had to shoulder it pretty hard, and there was over a foot of water and mud in the front, I nearly threw up. I went to my office and our main computer was blown up. I have it on the floor under my desk and it's networked to the Milling machine. We lost a lot of wood, Nice stuff wood I've been saving for special pens and such same with a lot of bowl stock.
After we got the boards up and outside to dry, I started thinking, I haven't made any thing but tool handles on my wood lathes for two months! here I was with a thousand or so dollars worth of wood that for insurance purposes was ruined, my 4 lathes sitting in water , and I suddenly realized I loved turning pens, and learning to make bowls and stuff that was fun, I spent a good part of the day explaining why orders were going to be late, and Now I'm firmly convinced that I was retired and I liked it that way, SO I guess this is where Andrew "animefan" starts running the tools more while I make use of some of the STUFF and lots of STUFF and take a few days a week off, and retire again, this is the third time, and supposedly the third time is a charm, Lord I hope they're right!!

Ken, my heart felt sorrow goes out to you and your family and associates. The most important thing is you and your family made it through this physically all right. You do have a great attitude about the whole thing by shifting much of the work over to your assistant and finding the time to enjoy what you really want to do.
God bless you and your family and friends.
Charles

Good luck to you Ken!!

Having been through my workshop flooding (twice), I will say the wood all dried out and was fine--don't throw it away!!!

Your plan sounds great, in any event!!

Sorry to hear of the problems in the shop. Like others have said, the wood will dry and you can get back to doing what you really enjoy. I truly hate to hear about damage to shops and equipment! I know most of us spend a lot of time getting things set up and then like spending time in our "special place"; then something happens to remind us why we put all that time into getting it set up to do what we enjoy.

Thanks for posting the information so those of us waiting on orders will understand a little delay in receiving another piece of equipment for our shops.

Hope things dry out soon and you can get it back in working order!

Sorry to hear about all the problems Ken! As long as you and the family are ok everything else can be fixed or replaced.Take it easy and just go day by day.
our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.
JIM

Sorry

Remember only this - wood and machines are only things. People are important, things are not. I'm am sorry for all of you folks who've had to go through this and we will pray that you all recover your things and give thanks that you and your's are ok.

Ken and Andrew we are sorry to hear about what you are going through. Please let us know if there is anything that we can help out with. Out thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

I am sorry to hear about your shop, but I am glad that you and your family are all okay. I really understand about being retired and working so hard. Sometimes events like the flooding give the needed perspective to realize more important things like doing the things that give us pleasure and make our spirits sing.
Hope that the wood dries out and your equipment can be repaired. Best wishes to you and your family.

to echo the words of everyone else...to heck with the soggy shop, they are replaceable. You and the family are not and that is what's important. Glad to hear you guys are fine and in time you will have your shop back up and running again.

Ken, sorry for what has happen, but every cloud has it's silver lining you just have to look for it and it seems you've found it.......if the semi retirement sticks.

Well, that just sucks! Dang pond! But I think you're making a good decision to back off a bit and return to something fun! I've determined that the fun is what's really important!

Scott.

Glad to hear you and the Family are OK. As far as the shop goes Im sorry to hear about that Ken, Could the shopping center that had the pond be held responsible???? Probably falls under the "Act of God" type of thing.....

If you need anything let me know......

Couldn't one argue that EVERYTHING falls under the act of God?

Ken, I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles! You have made a great contribution to penturning with your Woodchuck tools and your friendly posts and advise here. I hope some of that good karma you have built comes back to you now in your time of need!

Ken,
my heart goes out to you, my friend. I know firsthand how much of a bummer this
type of thing can be. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers and if I can do anything for you, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sorry this happened to your shop.

Thank you to every one that has offered to help, and to those who wished us well and also and very importantly every body that Prayed, That really means a lot to Andrew and I, we even had a call from one of our wood club members that also is a member here offering to help turn handles this is still a pretty tight group of people, and we love you.
the mud is gone and nothing but a bunch of boards got wrecked, The pond that was behind the shopping center, and the place has been abandoned for a couple of years.
Insurance man said he was very sorry, but I don't have flood insurance, The owner of the center is a good friend, and had one of his sons help us get the mud out and the carpet up. We got the machines up off the floor and the mud scraped off the boards, one of them was a 48x72x2 Paduk, that one kind of stings, I had some plans for that board.
Fortunately all of the pen kits and blanks were up on shelves and I was forced to look at them, Then it hit me this afternoon as we were moving the lathes back this 5 tiered shelf with several thousands of dollars worth of wood and acrylic of pen blanks sits directly across the room about 20 feet, and stares at me all day, Hence the Epiphany yesterday. So other than the computer and some wood and alot of packing supplies, everything is OK
Thanks every one
Ken

Sorry to hear about your flood issues. We here in Utah are told that it is coming shortly because of our overload of snow. It seems that no one is safe this year. Glad that you guys are all safe and dry.

flooding/retirement

Ken, so glad you all are not hurt!
It sounds like you are getting 'signs' that its time to enjoy yourself a while, and I pray you can.
Hope you can salvage much of your wood and tools!
