What would you do?

After using a square method using a drill and on the first voyage of a Artist Sketch pen, I found that the thread on the nib tube end got screwed up when I squared the end. I sit here with a beautiful Manzanita wood pen but cannot screw the body into the threaded tube. Not being one with an extensive array of tap and die set am confounded as to how to clear the threads. John, if you have a dremel and decent set of diamond cutters, you should be able to chase the threads.

Depending on how bad they are, I have cleaned up threads with a good set of picks. The craftsman pack that I have works well for that purpose.

John; HF and a few other places, offer a set of 5 or 10 small diamond files for under $10. They work just great on small metal or wood objects. Use the knife edge to repair the threads. Jim S

A small (relatively inexpensive $3-$4) set of thread files are almost necessary in my shop. They are quite handy for problems like you just mentioned.

I'd use a small half round file because the edge is sharper than a triangular or square file. A triangular file has a 60 deg edge like metric threads, but cleaning them by hand tends to take more off the sides of the threads before reaching the bottom.
Thread files are great tools and I have a couple, but I have never seen one that has the same lead as the odd sizes most often used on pen parts.

THREAD FILES. In all my sixty seven or so years, I have never heard of these. So now I am on my way to Rockler to see if they have them in stock. Or should I be headed to Harbor Freight?

Okay, this will be a an on going process as I need to purchase the Thread Files. I have half-rounds in my shop and may look at those. I will keep you posted.

I have one metric and one imperial ( but could be BSP as I've never used it ) If I remember correctly I paid about £20 each and that was over 5 yrs ago. You guys are so lucky to get stuff so cheap. I guess it's because you have a much bigger market.:frown:

PenMan1, what do you mean by a small set? Are you talking about a set of needle files?
