A couple of years ago I foolishly sold my Delta Unisaw. It was built like a Sherman tank and was very accurate. Due to it's weight and size I sold it. All I ever used it for was for perhaps cutting lumber for a shelf or so. I used it in the driveway and it was hard to move around. I purchased a crappy little Skill saw. I could easily move it around. How did I know I would get hooked on pen making. Soooo, I'm getting rid of my Skill saw and want to purchase an accurate saw. I have no room for a contractors saw but need something I can move easily and is capable of segmenting. I have looked at a Dewalt portable saw which is on wheels and appears to be quality. Does anyone out there have suggestions?

I know you said no contractor saw, but what else is there in a small size that has the quality you are looking for?
Have you seen the new smaller SawStop Contractor saw. It is awesome.
I have the larger Contractor SawStop, but I wish they had offered the new one back when I was looking.
Quality and Safety in one package.

That Dewalt is an excellent saw. Watch Home Depot when they have a tool sale or bring them in an advertised price and they will match it plus 10% off. If you just want a saw to do segmenting, keep your skill saw for larger work and look into buying a model makers table top saw. Harbor Freight also has a mini table top saw, that when fitted with a mini carbide blade and some home made jigs is very safe and great for segmenting small pieces. Again watch for a sale and use the 20-25% off coupon. The one bad feature of segmenting with a large table or large miter saw is the power of the saw itself. A table top band saw would be a lot safer. It's all in the jigs and setup that you use to make precised and repeated cuts no matter what you use. I also sometimes use an Incra Jig set up to do exact and repeated cuts with paper thin results. If you do get a larger saw , be sure to mount it on wheels so you can move it around. Jim S

I don't have one, but when I build my new shop in a few years, the saw will definitely be a SawStop (or some equivalent.)

I have a monster Delta Unisaw 5 hp with 52" table/fence. Unfortunately, it's in storage at the moment since I sold my house and shop and am temporarily renting...a much, much smaller place.

So...I was looking for something smaller, and inexpensive to use while renting here. Best option I've found seems to be the Kobalt at Lowes. $279, I think. Good features, expanding table, on wheels, good reviews. I haven't bought it, so I can't vouch for it personally, but just passing along the results of my research.

Good luck.
