OK The answer is: On the Rock and Bullwinkle Show in the late 50's and early 60's there was a segment that featured a time traveling genius Dog named Mr Peabody and his pet boy named Sherman. Mr Peabody had a time traveling machine called the "WABAC" (pronounced "Wayback") machine.

I'll have to admit that I had to look it up even though I was in Jr High - High School during that time & only vaguely remember the Wayback machine. I just couldn't recall from where -- we wuz poor folks and didn't get our first TV until 1965 so I didn't get to watch too many cartoons back then.
