What kind of Wood?

What kind of Wood is this?

This is a chunk from an old barn beam that I've had in my possession since I was 11 years old.

I was told it was Black Walnut and didn't question that. I cut this chunk from a part of the beam and doesn't look like B. Walnut to me.

I was also told at the time that other beams were of Wild Cherry and Shag Bark Hickory.

Anyway, as you can see perhaps, the wood is reddish with some visible grain pattern.

Any ideas, please?

I think it's the kind of wood that comes from a tree!:biggrin::wink:

But seriously folks; after looking on the web, I would say Shag Bark Hickory because it would be big enough for a beam. Just my opinion though.

I ain't always right, but I've never been wrong!
