In the books I reading about pen turning they talk about lighting and the importance of good lighting during the finish turning and sanding. I have florescent over head light in my shop which I can move around to put more light in one area if need be. I also have a swing arm florescent magnifying light I use with my scroll saw I have that mounted to the wall I did this so I don't get any vibration from the saw telegraphed in to the light I can move this light fairly easily. So is this kind of lighting enough for a lathe of should I think about something else that would put more light on my turning. Thanks for the help

Hi, I use an ordinary desk lamp (mounted above the lathe) fitted with a day light globe about 35 watts, this globe is of similar construction to a fluro, as incandescent globes have been banned down under. Some globes have a yellowing effect to them, which I find annoying.

I have found that lighting has immensly helped me during turning and finishing. I made an articulated arm set up with two Moffat type gooseneck lamps (from CSUSA). These lamps also have excellent swivel heads on the highly stable goosenecks. I have used 100W bulbs, but more recently switched to 23W CFL bulbs. It's like turning outside in the bright sun now:biggrin:. One of the lamps has a wide magnifier on the shade that has come in handy on occasion.

Thanks Kryn, tumbleweed and Dick for the replies you gave me. I have to say I like the rig you made Dick. I'm not sure I would need two of the Moffatt light but one might do the trick. I do have question about going form 100W to 23W CFL do they put enough light on the work to show up sanding marks and the like. I'm going to have to look of the light to see how much they are.

Dan, the 23W CFL shows sanding scratches just fine. It also shows gloss buildup very well when applying CA or WTF finishes. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dick it does help. I would also think there would be less heat as well. I found the moffatt lamps on amazon for under $57.00 and it's a prime item so I get free 2 day shipping. If I go with that lamp I have to choose which base to get.

I use high intensity fluorescent lighting that I got from Home Depot in my shop. They work great and give out lots of light and didn't break the bank.

That sounds like a good choice. Could you show a picture or put in a link so I know what they look like. I would like to knoe if Lowes has them I can get 10% off there.
