a BURL. I may just sound really stupid, but what exactly is a burl? I have not figured it out.

Definition: A large rounded outgrowth on the trunk or branch of a tree. The wood cut from such an outgrowth, often used decoratively as a veneer. It is like a wart on the tree.
The grain in burls is all gnarled up, and very pretty.

Thanks for the info Fred. I've tried to explain this to a couple of people. The Wart is a good explaination.
Didn't you use the "pregnant tree" for third base as a kid when playing stick ball?

Fred, I thank you a thousand times. That is what I thought it was but didnt want to seem stupid if I ever used the term in a sentence, Like "Oh my, that tree has some big burls!"
