Currently I own the jet mini lathe 10 by 14. I want to start turning goblets and small bowls. I imagine I need to purchase a chuck. What brand or model is going to give me the best value that will work with my small lathe but is not so small that I will outgrow it. eventually I want to own a much bigger lathe so that I can turn a much bigger bowls and platters.
As usual price is a significant concern as I am on a tight budget!

Any suggestions? thank you.

I have a Rikon and use a Oneway Talon chuck. I really like it. I have several different jaws that I have acquired as I have had the money. I turn bowls, calligraphy pens, drill with it, boxes, etc. I think that it is easier to use then chucks that use two bars to tighten. It is a well made chuck and if you get a larger lathe, some of them have the same spindle thread of 1" x 8. Just my opinion.
 
I also have a Jet mini and use the Oneway Talon. It may not be the cheapest chuck out there, but it is a very good one! It is a suitable size for a mini lathe but has enough capacity to still be a good match with a bigger lathe as well.

p.s. you can always get different insert adapters to fit other spindles ... you aren't locked in to the 1 x 8.

I also have the One Way Talon. I have made a bowl or 2 and have just played a little. I think its a great chuck. I have the #1 jaws and the #2 that came with it.

That is where I bought mine. It is the closest woodworking place to my house and i just waited till they sent me a discount coupon for wither 25 or 30% off
 
The best "Bang for the Buck" is the PSI Barracuda 2 . It's a key type chuck and it comes with 4 sets of jaws so you don't have to lay out more money for jaws over the price of the chuck . The Ti plated version also comes with a spur drive center and a set of small flat jaws . The plain set runs around $150 on sale at Amazon and the Ti version goes for around $180 .
The only downside is that it is a 1"X8tpi which is common on the mini and midi lathes but not on the larger lathes , but you can get an adapter for the 1 1/4" spindles so you can still use it with a bigger lathe but you will loose a little bed length and could have a little more runout . Still it is a capable chuck and will give you many years of service for about $50 to $100 less then the Nova or Talon with the same jaw sets .
 
I bought my 1st Talon Chuck on sale from Woodcraft. When upgraded my lathe just ordered new insert. Bought 2nd just a chuck body and #1 jaws from Packard Woodworks.
You can compare prices these only places sure sell Oneway Talons but must be more.

If you want better price look at Barracuda 2 #csc3000c for $179.95, you cannot change insert if upgrade your lathe.

Would stay away from Barracuda 2 T/N for $180-$199.95 only because of cost. It is a good chuck but for that kind of money might as well get Nova, Oneway, or Nova chuck.

Lots of good deals on NOVA chucks just have to shop around, some models upgradeable some not.
 
I have some chucks. 4 I believe.
I would do the same as I done before ,try to get the biggest bang for my buck ,buy one that is sold as a package deal (more than one set of jaws)
If you don't mind tommy bars they are less expensive still.

I have had a barracuda 2 for over a year now and it does everything i could want. Have out some really big pieces in it and no problem(i have a jet 1014) . I also bought a set of flat jaws for it for about $ 20 and can turn everything i can think of. Use it very much for turkey calls which i make a lot of.
 
Oneway Talons are great!! another very good chuck is the Super Nova 2, or for a smaller 10 inch lathe a Nova G3, they aren't quite as good as the Talon, but they are quite a bit better priced, I just got my second Nova 2 with a set of 2 inch jaws for 160.00 delivered with the spindle adapter, Extra jaw sets for either a Talon or a Nova will run between 35 and 60 dollars a set,
 
I too have a Jet 1014 and just bought my first chuck. Being retired and on a limited budget price was an issue. Looked the Barracuda 2, because of the Key tightening operation but needed other items so I went with the PSI Mini Grip CMG3C for $99.95.
It came with 3 sets of Jaws and will except all of the C Series Jaws shown in the PSI catalog. Althouh I was concerned about the lever system for tightenig I did not find it to be a probllem. I use it to drill pen blanks, my old 1980 drill press just was not getting it done. Will order the flat jaws for bowls etc when I have more $ ans time.

I am not an expert on chucks as this in the first one I have ever used but for the $ spent it works for me. May be worth checking out.
 
I've got a talon, and I like it just fine. I've also got one of the grizzly $99 chucks that are a vicmarc knock-off. It's a good chuck, but they don't currently sell optional jaws for it. I actually use the grizzly more than the talon most of the time.
 
Like many here, I have a Oneway Talon. When I upgraded to my Nova DVR XP (1 1/4 x 8) from a Jet 1220 (1 x 8) I just changed the insert and was all set. I have a few friends with Oneway 2436s that also use the Talon instead of the larger Stronghold.

The Talon is a nice durable chuck, the local woodworking school uses them in it's woodturning classes and they continue to work well despite years of use by students.
