What DISCOVERY means to me.

Discovery didn't give me miniture electronics and calculators that could solve serious math problems with a simple formula. Nope, Apollo did that! It didn't give me a dream that things that were beyond my usual thought process were, indeed, possible. Gemini did that.

Discovery technology did give me GREAT TV, it allowed me to watch world conflicts in real time. It provided me with a way to do "real things in real time" without giving up watching things that were important to me, in my leisure time. It also gave me a sense of security, by lending technology that intercepted the bad intentions of others and rendering them harmless.

This technology provided me with the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere, instantly.

It gave me confidence that WE, THE PEOPLE, could solve any problem, no matter how complex, or great the cost, both in terms of dollars and human sacrifice. It also proved that some things, no matter how complex, are reusable. It also proved that minor modifications can have major implications. It proved that people all over the world could cooperate to achive a goal that had benefit to all.

Discovery PROVED to me that sometimes ALL of people can agree, regardless of which political side of the isle that my beliefs sat. This is one of the few "political" things that I remember that had the support of the Executive, Legislative and Judical branches of Government.

Discovery gave me hope that all thing are possible through cooperation and hard work.

Godspeed, DISCOVERY. I, for one, will be forever in your debt.

No, Deep thoughts are not involved. No politics are involved. Scrapping this technology was one of the few bipartisan decisions made by our Government.

I pray we have a better solution. Hell, it changed weather and disaster forcasting as we knew it.

It does provide a perfect opportunity to say thank you to all people, all Governments, and the entire universe for making this GREAT idea a reality.

Frankly, I feel like the interesting times in which we now live, could use a little "Discovery" type thinking.

Oh yeah, Moke, I forgot. GREAT CAMERAS, at affordable prices. That $35 digital that Wal-Mart offers is a direct contribution of this technology.
 
All of the good things that came to "average Joe" from the NASA technology boggles my mind! Thank you to all that spent a lifetime "exacting" this science.
 
I'm sad to see it go. I always like the space program. It's one of those things we throw money at and get a return of investment, even if that return isn't cash in hand for the program itself. I always thought that we'd be living on the moon by now. Discovery definitely opened a lot of minds to imagine the seemingly impossible. Now we go forth into the era of non-manned space exploration. That's exciting too..but it's just not the kind of excitement that inspires us to dream and achieve.

correct..what I mean though is that the space program does not reap all the cash rewards for those inventions, it's private companies contracted by the space program that reap the rewards...of course you can look at it and say either way, we all win, since we get the products and the private companies pay the taxes that fund the space program and so much more, to begin with. I'm really quite sad how the space program has lost so much funding over the last decade. If I was in charge, I could balance the budget and fund the space program the way it should be...but hey, you'd have to declare me dictator to make that possible! I would implement my average intellectual common sense to the situation and employ simple solutions for over complicated problems. All hail King Jeff ! :biggrin:
