 Well i should have plenty of time to get back into the shop again. I walked off a job that I have had for the last 12 years. I was really wearing on me and I snapped last night. I worked 6 but mostly 7 days a week most of which was not voluntary. I hardly ever got time off but when I did it was like a vacation. Only thing I'm going to miss about the job is the money. I should have stayed but my mental and physical health were going down the drain.

I'm sorry if this sounds like i'm whinning but I just needed to vent a little.

I'm going to take some time to recover and then it's time to start looking for a new one.

Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do. Health both mental and physical are more important. No one at the end of life has ever remarked "Man, I wish I had worked more hours!". Self, family, relationships, faith, etc. are the important things in the long run.
Been out of a job a few times myself!

Sounds like you might have been in healthcare. I can totally relate. Enjoy a little relaxing and good luck finding the right thing for you.

Been there, done that. You did the right thing for yourself and your family. When anything wears out a person's health, mental or physical, it is time right then to make changes to protect himself. My late wife worked herself into heavy stress that helped cause her illness, I do believe. My current bride completely burned out at her job and is on disability today. Both are/were RN's. Health care workers are under extreme stress all the time if they are doing their jobs for the right reasons.

OOPS! I almost went off on another of my diatribes. I can preach for days about the abuses health care workers are subjected to daily.

What ever your job was, it can not be nearly as important as your health. You did the right thing. Being unemployed is not all that bad. Being dead is long term.

It wasn't healthcare but actually the other end. I worked for a cigar manufacturer as a maintenance mechanic. Yes I have type 2 diabetes and the stress in the place always made my blood sugar sky rocket.

As far as a new job, hopefully I can get a 9 to 5 one and have a life again. Was tired of being a vampire. (3rd shift for the last twelve years).

My condolences for having to leave your job. And my congratulations for realizing what it was doing to you and having the guts to take action to correct the situation.

Gary, if you didn't quit in front of the owner of the business, be sure to write him a very clear letter explaining why you quit and send it to his home so it can't be intercepted.

It probably won't get you your job back, but it sure will help the next guy who gets your job or other employees. Some owners are completely clueless as to what's going on in their businesses and most will do something about it if they know about it.

Oh yeah, you may or may not want to send this until after you find your next job, although I'm betting you won't get a good recommendation since you didn't give two weeks' notice.

I write letters like this every time I quit a job, fire a doctor or veterinarian, lawyer, banker, etc. I'm always polite, but to the point. I don't usually get a response, but when I do it's to thank me for notifying them about the way I was or was not treated and that they'll look into it and take measures to insure it doesn't happen to others.

Mywifey always said to pick friends and lovers for what they do in their off time not what they do for a living.

I have tried though not always successfully to do things I like to do.

Good luck my freind

Don't worry about it bud. You'll feel much better in yourself. I was in that exact same place. Just recently got redundancy from them and physically and mentally I have been doing much better. The stress from work was causing both physical and mental illness.

Last March I walked away from a very lucrative job as a heavy equipment mechanic. It was like taking the weight of the world off my chest. Once the "Oh crap what have I done" goes away you be so relieved. I would rather be broke and happy with what I do than have money, be stressed, grumpy all the time, and hate what I do. It will work out just have faith.

Gary, if anyone can relate to your situation, I can. I have been retired for 5 years now. After 33 years at the same public service job in mid-mgmt., I was about to be a victim of an involuntary restructuring demotion. So, I did a quick assessment, and politely told them to find another lackey. I was fortunate that I had a very good retirement pension in the wings, so I went into retirement at 57. As of this month, I am now officially on the Social Security roles along with my pension. Physically and mentally, I never felt better, and you will too. If it had not been for having this time now, I would have never found penmaking and woodturning. What a way to go.

Thank-you Parson. I had thought about writing a letter but i'm not too sure who to send it to. I think must of the problems there are being caused by the higher ups. We were bought-out by Phillip Morris (an Altria Co) 5 years ago and they have been slowly dismantling us for the last 4 years. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't close the doors and move the company to Richmond within the next 2 years.

Gary, I pray for the best things to come your way. Did they provide health insurance? That factor might be why you stayed so long.
This may be a life changing moment for you. Follow your passion and be the best at it.

Some times the greatest blessings come from our sudden or rash decisions. The main point is that you only have one life to live and only one wife and kids, you need to be
there for them and you can't be if you are gone. I learned that the hard way myself.
I worked for 35 yrs and worked my butt off, until one day I said to myself, I AM GONE!!!!
Best thing that ever happened to me, now I am turning pens and wood items on my terms and being my own boss.
I truly hope everything will be ok...just never give up.....

Gary,

My guess is you did the right thing. I lost my job last July, after disagreements with management over what I considered to be dealings with customers that were unethical. I had threatened to walk off the job a year before that, and was told things would change. My life is dramatically better today -- better health, lower weight, much better mental attitude.

Life is too short to be miserable most of your waking hours, in a job that is not fullfilling.

Enjoy a little time off, take care of yourself, cherish family and friendships, and then find something you want to do the rest of your life, and something that you will truly enjoy doing.
