Last Friday while gluing some Corian with the mask in a drawer, I was overcome with ca fumes. The coughing lasted a day or two but a shortness of breath wouldn't go away. Went to the doctor today who sent me to the emergency room. Long story short, I have pneumonia. If I hadn't been overcome with ca fumes, I may not have discovered that until too late.

Found out I had a tumor in my lung the same way...not CA, but pneumonia...heal well!!! But why were you inhaling the fumes to begin with? That stuff fries lung tissue in a half second. Trust me, it's my job to know!

Well, glad to hear you are getting sorted out, sometimes "things" happen for a reason...!

You mention a mask to use with CA and I wonder what sort of musk you have as I went through 5 chemical masks to find one that has the appropriate crystals in the filters to filter the CA fumes, most masks won't do it, believe me...!

I asked my Resin supplier if he had or he could get in for me a mask that has the highest grade of filtration possible, not costing me a fortune, he know every chemical there is and knows exactly what I was talking about, even though he doesn't sell CA but he know what is in it and what the fumes are all about so, get brought in the same mask with 2 types of grades, one will do most chemicals including the Polyester resin fumes but the next grade up, is grade up to ammonia that is something capable to get anywhere but the filters on this mask, will prevent any fumes to get in so, I got it and put it to the test.

Nothing fumes more than having 100 pen blanks line up and soak each surface with super thin CA, repeating it on all 4 faces. The area of wood that gets covered with CA is considerable, so is the fumes that come out of such surface x 4.

I always do this outside but under cover and I had days that after doing this I couldn't swallow anything for a couple of days as my throat was swollen, irritated and hurting like hell, this is, using whatever the mask I decided to use that was suppose to stop the fumes to get in but, when we use a mask, we tend to breath more with our mouth so the throat gets a flogging, no mentioning the lungs...!

I use anti-fog goggles made my Dewalt to protect my eyes from the CA fumes, they seem to work ok but the problem was the breathing apparatus that wasn't as suitable as they say they are so, for anyone that really wants a mask that protects you from the CA fumes, I couldn't recommend anything else but this one.

Even tough in Australia, the price is worth the shipping costs to have it sent to you. There may be other masks as good as this one in your country, I don't know nor I would suggest any substitutes, is easy enough to buy one of these from this store

A mask (I'm assuming half-face type mask) is only as good as the fit. Many clinics will do a respirator fit test and give you the exact face mask you need. Also, the fit is useless with the incorrect cartridges. The 3M 6051 cartridge (particulate and organic vapor) should do the trick along with the half-face respirator (3M 6200).

Again, good luck kicking the pneumonia Bob!

I agree totally with you, that was one of the first things that impressed me with this mask, the supplier didn't have any detailed pic of the mask details but I noticed the quality of the material and fit of that mask when I got it, I don't know what they will call this type of rubbers in our days but, when I was a kid we would call it "virgin rubber" the only one that would withstand the strain of using it on sling shots...!:wink::smile:

Like I said, there may be many other masks capable to do as good job as this one does, what would concern me is the cost to have one one of those specially fitted masks, the cost would be crazy, I believe...!

I was fortune enough to be ample to vent my dust collector outside when sanding and finishing. the draws the dust and fumes away from the area where I am working. I wish you a fast recovery. be careful.
 
The mask I have, and yes I do use it, Was just rated for chemical fumes. It seems to work. I may check into a better one. This is one I can use with my glasses on. Thanks for all your replys guys. You are the best.
