for those that follow my threads you may remember my son started turning. my son has autism, (high functioning aspergers) well like most kids on the spectrum this has become some what of an obsession. he turned his 4th pen yesterday, and kaboom, the pen exploded. it was only a matter of time. but hard to watch all the same. in his defense it was an incredibly figured piece of teak burl, he picked the blank. finally got him calmed down and offered to help him fix it, but in his mind he couldn't give someone a broken pen. so convinced him to start a new one. turned out great and i segmented the broken one and will let him have it. hopefully he will see the repair and realize what is possible. just wanted to share.

You could show him the repair as a feature! Perhaps the pen was not supposed to be just a single piece of wood. Help him to make a segmented pen with say a piece of wood that has a crack in it that needs to have his help to become a beautiful pen. Sort of like showing him that he is the maker and the wood is just his material not the other way around. Not sure if it will work but it is certainly a great lesson for him.

Had one blow up four times yesterday and still salvaged it. He will learn to turn adversity into success.

thank you all for the encouraging words. i'm trying to enjoy our shop time, truly i am, but its tough.

i thought i would post our efforts. the first is my son's second go round and the second is the one i fixed which he will get to keep. i tell you, the kids got fit and finish down pat.
