We're supposed to get the remnants of Issac all weekend so I went out to clean the shop last night so I could spend a lot of time in the shop practicing making scallops and segments. I picked up my big Stanley miter box to move it and as I tilted it, the blade slid down and gashed a giant tear in my thumb.

One of my clients is a doctor who lives up the street so I asked if he could look at it to see if I needed to visit the emergency room. He's a GP but interned under a plastic surgeon so he just put everything back together in the kitchen using SteriStrips and glue, gave me some Oxycontin and sent me home. But now I have a giant splint on my thumb and can't use it for a couple of weeks at least.

I guess I'll clean the veneer bench and area in the basement and organize all the veneer flitches and do some veneering but I REALLY wanted to try some scallops.

First Rick, now me. These things come in threes so be careful out there and watch your thumbs!

That is a real bummer, Stephen! Do me a HUGE favor though. Throw the Oxy in the trash (pill by pill, not in the bottle). I almost said flush them, but that isn't a good idea either. Oxy is the most addictive medication in the world and is four times as addictive as heroin. Don't take it!!! I have known only two people who have ever taken it. One is our previous pastor's son and he is in prison due to his addiction. The other was a Gulf War vet and spouse of a MSgt that worked for me. He is no longer with us due to his addiction. And neither of them ever showed any signs of having that kind of disposition prior to them being prescribed the drug. It is bad, bad stuff! It scares the crap out of me and I'm fearless!!!!!

Man that's not good, I agree about the Oxy, ya gotta be carefull with it, I use it but I only use it when my back is so bad I can't stand it about once a month or every other month.

I heard one time that it's only two carbon atoms away from heroin, not sure if thats true but it's that bad...

Hope the thumb heals quick.

He just gave me 3 pills so I can sleep while my wife rolls over on my thumb...

I'm, shall we say accident prone, and have had to take Oxy a few times. Haven't had any problems but thanks for the warnings/concern.

I have to agree here. I have a couple of friends that stopped smoking crack when they found Oxy's. That should tell you something. Fortunately this is association in a recovery program, so we're all getting better.

I know the frustration. I have not been able to get in the garage for almost 3 weeks now due to a severe reaction to Poison Sumac that left the back of both my hands looking like 2nd degree burns. The weather was cool (upper 70s) while I was unable to get in the garage, now its back in the upper 80s lower 90 and I can't function out that at that temp. I hope to get a couple hours in the morning before it gets too hot.

Here is a tip they gave my wife when she had carpal tunnel surgery. Take 2 pillows, stack them up and tape them together. Then when you go to bed, put your lower arm between the pillow and lay so that your hand is going up though the pillows at 90 degrees to the bed. This keeps your hand elevated above your heart and reduces the risk of your wife rolling over on your hand.

Hope you heal soon.
