I bought a lot of cocobolo off Ebay and all of it was cocobolo. Then I saw this piece that we cut into knife scales and 2 pen blanks. Only thing is I'm not sure if it is cocobolo. It is definitely rosewood, but doesn't smell like cocobolo at all. Plus, its pretty red. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Look up "King Cocobolo", it's just a high grade of cocobolo, it definitely can be reddish. I think that's what you have there.

Whatever it is, they look good. I've not worked with King Cocobolo that I know of, but all of the Cocobolo I have worked with had a visible grain and pores. Hmm, can't give a positive ID on it, but the chatoyance makes me instantly think of Granadillo, which is typically more brown.

It does have a figure I have not seen in cocobolo but have seen in pernambuco.
the story will be in the end grain. Go to wood finder and compare yours to their examples.
