It was marked maple burl, comes from the far northwest of USA, I have never seen a figure like this---anyone know what it is??? It is light weight.
Sprayed to highlight figure.

I suppose it could be maple burl as there is so much variation within trees but I've not seen anything that looks quite like that, either.

wow Ed, that's really pretty. I wish I could tell you what it is. Let me know if you want me to volunteer to turn one for you to do additional research.

It is NOT yet stabilized (part is in the juice), but the smell is consistent with maple, not strong however. The pattern does come through on a pen, although the piece I chose had a LARGE knot, so I am pleased to say it did not "blow up", but the pattern is only good, not fabulous (IMO). I will photo it and show it soon.

We have a pretty certain decision! Local guy who knows wood walked in and said,
"Oregon Big Leaf Maple Burl", looks just like the piece I have!!
Apparently very hardy tree, so not a lot of burl wood available.
We are stabilizing it (turns great after stabilization, over doubling it's weight)
Will be selling it next week.
