...the above phrase to be sung in a sing-song tone... [:p]

Anyway, we splurged and bought the Drill Doctor 750X! [8D]

We ordered it from Amazon.com for $110 and I think we qualify for the Drill Doctor $15 rebate which makes the end cost only $95!! :D

It arrived here the middle of the week. I had hoped to try it out today, but so far it has been too cold to be outside for any length of time. I've watched the included DVD and read the user's manual twice. I'm looking forward to testing it and then using it. We decided to buy it because our 7mm drill bit has become very dull (that Brazilian Cherry is really rough on the drill bits! [B)] ) and it seems pointless to buy another bit when all you need to do is sharpen the first one. ;)

One question however, for those of you who already own a Drill Doctor.
How do you go about sharpening a brad-point drill bit (the one with the spike on the end)?
Do you sharpen it like a standard bit or otherwise? Can you sharpen the brad point without grinding it down?

Thanks,

Congrats! I got one as a Christmas present and the difference is like night and day. Drilling is almost effortless now.

My thought would be t grind the brad point down and turn it into a split point bit.

Good Job Josh. I got mine from Sear and it cost me $114.00 after the rebate. I read a post on here also that when you sharpen a brad point you turn it into a regular bit, but I have not tried it as of yet, I need to but I lost my round tuit button,so says swmbo.[:D]

You cannot resharpen brad point bits to their original configuration on the DD. You will have to sharpen them to either a standard twist or a splitpoint configuration.

And a little tip..... The DD wheels are pretty expensive and will only do about 200 sharpenings according to the manufacturer. To conserve those wheels, take the brad point off with a regular grinder, if you have one, and just finish the sharpening on the DD.

Thanks for that bit of info!
I sorta already knew that, but it's nice when someone else clarifies it in print. [8D]

I'm assuming that when you take off the point on the bench grinder, you simply grind the spike even with the tip of the bit. Or, is there more technique to it?

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask. I'm assuming split-point bits are more beneficial than standard, is this correct?

Thanks,

Congrats, I bought a 750x a little while ago. And haven't had a chance to use it. I also bought a pair of grinding wheels for it for $10 bucks each. So I'm set for a while.
