Wax paper and CA

I am working on my finish using CA. Do you get less lines using wax paper applying the CA or does everyone use papertowels?

Hi Toni Wax paper. plastic bags. paper towels, and what ever. Its all in what you learn with. You will get all kinds of answers for this one. I use the blue shop towels But thats what works for me.

I've always use (Bounty) paper towels, with a light touch, with the understanding that the paper begins the drying process for the CA.

I really miss Bounty papertowels, you have know idea how crappy paper towels are in New Zealand!!

Does it matter what you use depending on the thickness of the CA?
 
What ever you want to use is best for you . I've used wax paper , delrin strips (my current choice) , the little plastic part baggies from the kits , blue shop towels , bounty , viva and even generic A&P brand paper towels . They all work , it just depends on what you want to use .
 
I tried plastic film, packing foam, ziplock baggies, purple gloves, and everything I could find at one point and they all tended to leave spiral ridges on the blanks. The paper towels leave a nice smooth coat, but it's thin, and they waste most of the ca. Still, that's my preferred method. On the days that the mojo ain't working and I have to resort to the "lay it on thick and sand the ridges off" method, I just use my finger. Fewer ridges cause you can feel when the glue first starts to set better, and adjust the pressure and speed to minimize displacing the glue, leaving a smoother layer. Not as smooth as the paper towel, but better for filling in gaps and such.

do you sand after applying each layer of CA when applying it with papertowels?

When I use CA the CA goes white not clear
 
I use thin CA and sand after about every third coat , most pens get about 12 coats . If you don't overwork the CA then you don't have to sand as much if at all . If the CA is turning white you have a problem somewhere , either bad CA or there is a moisture problem . The only time I've ever had CA turn white was when I tried CA accelerator , it clouded the finish , never tried it again .
Nope no package yet , but my Paua stock came in today , I'm doing a little happy dance , I'm gonna make a Paua Abalone click slimline with a parker refill ... I'm in heaven !!!
 
I use the little plastic baggies. Seems to leave more CA on the blank, where I want it, instead of being soaked into the paper towel... YMMV
 
Toni -- I leaned to shear scrape the CA high spots with a lightly curved super sharp shear scraper (or a skew flat on the tool rest) while wearing mag eyes magnifying lenses to help with a very light touch.

Other than that I use CA with a polymerized linseed oil on paper towel most commonly. I find that reuse of the stiff shaped portion several times does work well. Just a drop of linseed oil goes a long ways. Any cheap papertowel seems to work with the oil added first.

I used little plastic bags, until I had some CA melt through one and blister my finger.:frown:

I could not keep the paper towel from leaving fibres in the CA. I do use a paper towel for BLO.
 
I use a strip of paper towel folded in half with a strip of wax paper inside. I heard this recommended on here somewhere, and I now no longer have to explain why I have little white pads glued to all my fingertips. The PT helps smooth and spread the CA, while the wax paper prevents it from soaking through the paper towel... I use medium CA, and a small misting of accelerator with each coat, and let the accelerator work and then evaporate for nearly a minute each coat (if the accelerator is still on the surface, the next layer doesn't adhere, and it will chip off). I don't sand between coats, and on the last 2 coats (usually 7-10 total)I put a few drops of BLO on the PT, which lubes it and prevents the CA from drying to it, which gives me a much smoother finish than without the BLO. I also use a skew at first to turn off the high points, just because it's usually more readily handy than the sandpaper, and a bit quicker at removing the high points.
 
I've tried a few things but end up going back to paper towels. Usually the blue shop towels. I tried the little plastic bags like some have mentioned the other day. I seem to get to much on when I use that and end up with ridges. I never thought about trying wax paper. Guess that's next.
