I wanted count of a smooth wide rope on my blank. I got smallest bullnose bit I had but the grooves were to small. I went to a larger bullnose (quarter inch router bit) and it turned out better but still not wide enough.

I got another quarter inch router bit with the bullnose it was about a quarter of an inch across the top. It looked too big, but it worked perfect. I cut it with four holes apart, and it made a nice smooth the wavy rope.

Moral, looks can be deceiving.

I must only assume you are using the Beall Pen Wizard or a similar tool. Here is the bit I use for rope twists. It is manufactured especially for cutting rope twists on pens for the Legacy mills but works fine if using a (dremmil/foredom) tool that holds bits with 1/4 inch shafts.
