I have twice now had bottles of CA leak or split and make a mess. The first time it happened the shelf and things beside the bottle were glued and CA dripped on several things below that shelf. Since then I have put the CA bottles I am using in a plastic paint bucket. Well last evening it happened again! I went to use some Loctite and it was glued to the bottom of the paint container with several bottles of CA. ARGH!

Anyone else had this happen? The bottles are inside the house, so not exposed to freezing temps or anything like that.

What brand of CA? I've gone through a lot of bottles of CA (mostly starbond brand) and have never had a bottle split. Are the bottles turning yellow over time?

Might be worth calling the CA manufacturer (not the retailer you bought from) and talking to them about it. Maybe they've gotten a bad batch of bottles from their low cost supplier. You never know what the low cost bidder might substitute for a key ingredient to save a penny or two these days. If nothing else, they might send you a replacement bottle of CA.

Yep, I have had that happen to at least 3 bottles (at different times). The bottles were at least 6 months old. Two were in the house and one in the shop. The two in the house were never even opened. All were the "Hot Stuff" brand. The one in the shop was close to my pen drill bits that were laying flat on a wood shelf and all the bits were stuck to the shelf.

Never with CA but I did just have a pint of Shellac open up on the bottom and drip down a storage bin, into the trays and one to table and glues everything down. Messed up some Banksia pods I had on the table....

Boy!!! Does that bring up bad memories. I've been down that shellac road myself. Probably a bit easier to clean up than CA, but still a headache.

i have experienced this as well with the E-Z Bond CA. Great glue, but mine was somewhere around the 6-8 months old mark and i noticed a split on the bottle. the glue is still good though!

For obvious reasons, I handle a LOT of bottles of glue.

The only time one has leaked was when it dripped onto the bench and I placed the bottle IN the drip (obviously, I did not see the drip). When I attempted to pick it up, several days later, the bottom of the bottle "tore" open.

Ho damn, I hope that none (12 at the moment) of my 16oz bottles of CA develop any leaks, I keep them not far above my head in the computer room, with all the printers, computers and tonnes of other stuff, underneath it...!

I put that shelve in there as is high, the whole length of the wall and near 40cm wide so, I can store all the CA, accelerator and other stuff that I want safe from being knocked down, certainly a safe place to have them but, not so much is some of the CA bottles develop cracks and start leaking, there is a lot of CA in one of those 16oz bottles so, I'm going to get a tin (don't trust plastics on CA...!) container big enough or some smaller ones to put those bottles in, before something goes wrong. It may never happen but, if some bottles are failing, I may be next, better safe than sorry, huh...???

I'm going to do it right now, thanks for the warnings...!

Cheers
George

Actually, up high in a room with computers, etc is a terrible spot to store excess CA anyway. Best thing for long life from what I understand is cool or refrigerated. What you described is a warm spot which could lead to early aging of the CA.

I realize this is an old thread, but I had a thought. A muffin tin might be a good solution. That way if one leaked, it would not glue down all the others.

Another add to an old thread... I buy all my CA glue and my epoxy from Ed and Dawn... never had a bottle leak to date... I store it in my shop in a small cabinet... never bring the Ca into the house, but in winter when we get freezes, I will bring the epoxy in... the epoxy and the wood glues will freeze... also bring in the accelerator as it will freeze too.

I think I iwill follow your example myself.

Freezing is not our problem here...heat will kill the CA. When the temp gets up over 100 my glue comes in the house with the AC.

Interesting... I've had issues with Grizzley's brand of CA in that the CA bottles are difficult to open after I've initially used them... I've had to use pliers to open them and after several openings, I can no longer open them as the tops of the bottles twist off... I store the Grizzley CA kits in the refrigerator so they are kept cool, yet I still have had the issue... Wonder if I should purchase individual units rather than the kit (that containes debonder, jel, thick, medium, thin, activator, plus several different types of bottle caps...) Anyone else had this problem or have a solution??? Grizzley CA is a GREAT product and works EVERY time, other than this issue... Thanks in advance for all assistance/comments!

A lot of people have issues with the bigger bottles ... they just can't get through all of it before the bottle goes south on them.

I use the little .07 oz tubes of regular Harbor Freight brand superglue. I generally get to use all of it, cept for the very few occasions where I've stepped away from the lathe while finishing an item and forgot to cap the tube. I get a 10-pack for $2.99 and I've never had any problem with the stuff.

You may want to try using the little containers and see if that works better for you.

I had the same thing happen to me. I thought it was a can of lacquer but it turned out to be a can of Shellac. Bottom seam... didn't think it would be so caustic to metal.

I understand the heat issue where you are... we lived for a year in Tucson... loved the desert, but missed the trees... never had an issue with my CA yet.. it will get upwards of 90 degrees in my shop on some days, but more often winter is a bigger problem.
