A few days ago I cut up some offcuts of burr (burl) elm into pen blanks. After I had salvaged all the blanks I could from this piece I was still left with a piece of wood that was so attractive I could not bring myself to throw it away. Too thin to make anything else with, I simply sanded the base flat and drilled a recess with a 50mm forstner bit for a tea light and glass holder. No turning was involved and the finish is as nature intended.
Not a great artwork or a great turning, but something useful from a piece of wood that might otherwise have been discarded.
