Anyone have or had good experiences on a particular AntiVirus Protection download for Windows 8 OS? I've had some not so very good experiences with Norton, previously.

I just got a new computer, with Win 8 OS, having had Ubuntu OS for past 5 years or so.

I'm running WIN 8 with McAfee supplied by my IP. So far, so good!

I'm no expert, so don't ask me anything more than a basic question!

Geek Squad has a program for $199, they will fix and maintain up to 3 computers for a full year as often as you need and includes Kaspersky Virus software that gets updated daily. That includes taking your computer to them or working with them over the phone. They saved my butt big time. No problems since.
Even better is that at the end of the first year, you can renew for $99 a year.
They'll also come to your house for $49 and fix whatever you need including internet and TV issues when you are on this program.
To me it was money well spent.

I have seen bad results with every scanner on the market to date (with the exception of one but that was an old school class B+ system)

With many of the code that I have been cleaning up and dealing with over the past 4 months or so there is a very distinct pattern of getting around virus scanners, some are easier to disable than others. It was Mcafee himself who was on the lam and posting security questions online about tracking. It was kaspersky who discovered the state-sponsored virus.

Also the bulk of nasty code today is malware based and passes programs like avg, norton and others with out a hiccup. True viral code today is somewhat rare and mostly found in very select coveted circles.

Why doesn't my iMac need to have all the aftermarket anti virus stuff clogging up the computer. I am asking this seriously. I have had my iMac for 6 months and have yet to have an issue with a virus or malware, and I haven't changed my browsing habits.

15 years now on a PC with no anti-virus and haven't had a virus or malware/spyware yet.

Stop clicking on random things and opening shady emails and you won't have this problem.

In my opinion, Win 8.1 is in and of itself a virus or plague on the unsuspecting public. Beyond that, though, I just use the stock Windows anti-virus. It lets in all the same viruses that every other major anti-virus company lets in, and it is free.

I'm with buttonsHT on this, though. I'd rather not have any virus protection. Unfortunately, if you use the internet at all, or download any software at all, you need it. (I suspect that buttonsHT actually has had malware on his PC at some point and never realized it. Several well-known software companies were using some ad related software in the early 2000's that was later found to be malware. They stopped as soon as they found out, but still, there was an awful lot of people that used that software.)

Well, not always. I 'm not sure what you mean by random things, but I've gotten viruses without doing this. Thru various web sites and such. Emails have always been deleted if I was not aware of the sender's ID.

I've had Ubuntu for the past 5 years and never had a problem. Unfortunately for me I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.4. Big mistake, nothing but problems and "shut downs", not able to print, to name but 2 problems. Do, the new computer and Win 8 OS.

I've lost 3 computers over last 13 years prior to Ubuntu.

Kaspersky One! Best antivirus on the market! Updates its virus definitions sometimes hourly. Both McAfee and Symantec can hold onto new virus definitions for up to a week. With Kaspersky, as soon as they can protect you from a virus, they push it out to your computer.

Since installing it 6 years ago, I have had zero issues with viruses, spamware, and spyware.

Of course, as with anything else, YMMV. (but not by much!)

It might be the same reason I haven't had a need for Anti virus S W for my Ubuntu OS. Few viruses written for Ubuntu and I imagine for Mac as well. My G.son and G. daughter both have a mac and so far, no problems for past 5 years or more. Just can't do quite so much with a Mac, I'm told.

Good question. The most recent downloads, such as 12.04 & 13. something are not as user friendly as past versions. I have had nothing but problems, and a host of others apparently with the newer versions. Shutting down computer, not printing at times.

Also software that I want to use is not available for Ubuntu in any version.

So why don't you reload Ubuntu on the new computer??

8 years with a MAC mini no issues. I LOVE my MACs. My shop PC on the other hand....Lets just say I will be looking at the recommendations here.

My brother worked for Microsoft and he uses:
Windows Defender ( free comes with Win8 )
Malwarebytes ( there is a free version that you run when you think you have a problem with mal ware)

All the other ones sloooow the system. These two work great!

I have used Advanced System Care when I was working with the developer preview of win 8. I haven't used win 8 a lot but other IT people I know like it. ASC also has a malware fighter, defrag, and an uninstaller that works really well.
