Vibration Test - Now Costly Repairs

A week ago I started hearing some Bearing noise and called for a vibration test on my CNC machine. Well the test shows that the some bearings are shot. Yesterday we started the process of replacing the bearings.
This is not for the faint of heart and this is still work in progress and will continuous until Friday.
I forgot to mention the machine is just 20 days out of warranty and the cost of all the bearings is going to be around $8000.00 + labor at $3000 and Hotel and Travel $1000.00

The most amazing thing is that the company who distributes these machines and the Manufacturer decided to stand in for all repairs
without any cost on my end. They sure stand by there product and I am pleased that they do because I have not expected them to do it at all.

I have three more machines on order for delivery from June to December and am sure they will make up for it.

Besides the made in the USA pen parts I have been making for the last year I have also ventured into other fields and have been very successful in finding a lot of work to keep the CNC busy and to expand.

Not cheap to have CNC machines but never a dull moment with very little rest in between.

Those must be some super special custom bearings. I could understand the labor cost, given what they probably have to do to get to the bearings, but the price of the bearings seems a little steep to me. I suppose when you have a machine that could make components for NASA or Boeing, parts are a little more expensive.

Wonder why the bearings failed so soon? Good thing they are covering the cost for you. I imagine the 3 additional machines you have on order played into that decision. :wink:

Now you need to think about adding a 3D printer to your shop.

They are replacing all the bearings in the machine and not just the one in the picture. $400 - $600 per bearing and they go in pairs.

The 3d printer is on my mind but I have to line up some work for that first.:biggrin:
 
The reason these bearings are so expensive is because they are in the " precision bearing class " and held to the highest standard. When we would replace bearings on one of our large paper machines, the bearings would be upwards of $50,000 each. And you need special people to replace and lazor align them. Counting down time, material, and labor costs, The total could easely run $5-10 million dollers or more. The reason you have factory people install them is because it is above the average persons skills, and they will back up the repair. Hope you are up and running soon. That is a great company to cover that expence for you !!! Jim S

I worked in a field where the difference between our machines and our competitions was service. I made a lot of trips as a factory expert when systems went down and the field engineers couldn't fix them fast enough.


The company standing behind them wants your business and taking care of the customer's problems is the surest way I know for them to keep it. It is good business.
 
I hope everything's up and running again, Constant. You certainly keep that beast busy!

Maybe you need that 3D printer to clone a few more of YOU to run those new machines!
