Vesper click question

I recently turned and assembled a PSI Vesper click pen. It worked fine for the first three clicks, then it jammed. The upper spring was stuck in it. I pushed the clicker parts out, and got the spring out. I reassembled it with only the spring on the refill, and it works fine. What is the upper spring for, if it works without it?

If nothing else, it adds tension to the button to keep it from rattling around.

It doesn't rattle with just the one spring. I'll be working on eleven more of them, I'll compare this one to one with both springs, as long as the upper spring doesn't get stuck again.

I discovered that you're right. It doesn't exactly rattle, but the plunger is loose without the upper spring.
