Here's my current casting rig. I made the holes compatible with baby soda bottles, and since I was having mold release issues, I decided to try a different approach. I made the mold around a different vertically cast blank, filled it and added heat. It's hopefully going to be a solid, vivid Aztec Gold which I plan to reverse paint black. This is more fiberglass resin as it's what is here to cast with. I think the amber hue to the resin will help make the gold pop a bit more as well as making reverse paint more rewarding. I hope to mount this on a Zen tube if nothing goes wrong.

Alan -- take a look at some of the work by Marilyn Campbell before you apologize too much about use of fiberglass resins. They are different than the predominate materials being used, but are capable of doing some excellent things. There are other examples of art being done with fiberglass resins and turning.

Let loose of that apology and go forth and be creative --- make what you have and are doing standout with creative ideas.

I'm not too upset about using the resin, it's just been tough negotiating the inherent liabilities I've been running into with it through the process of learning it. I like the fact that it can make some great pen blanks, I do however prefer regular PR.

The biggest draw back to the fiber glass resins is that all most all will turn yellow to brown with age/time. So with that color, it may enhance it. Doing labels or other materials that you would want to see not so much. Lots of uses for the fiber glass resin with out the fiber or cloth or tape. If it works for you go with it. the color tuned out looken good as is should pop when turned!

There it WAS reverse painted red. Huge chunk flaked off from getting in too tight on the bushing, I guess. More bubbles than I could shake even the pointiest of sticks at. I think PR will be a better way to go all around. I'm going to make one more attempt to horizontal cast this and see if that gets me anything better.

looks like it is going in the right direction. Get you some 3/4 inch schedule 40 pipe and cut it about 6 1/4 inches and get a cork with a peice of rubber glove to cover it to keep the resin from touching it and pour one like that. I think you will be happy
