can you wrap veneer around a tube and then cast it? I don't know how tight vaneer will go until it cracks.

Veneers can be bent into some tight curves with heat. Lutiers have been doing it for years. The wood needs to be supported with steel strap or shimstock Slimeline would be indeed challenging - large diamter tubes would be easier.
