veneer core???

What is the piece of wood called that is left over after they cut a log into veneer? Does anyone know where of if such wood can be purchased???

They are called backer boards. I bought some really nice cherry from our local hardwood supplier when he bought a big batch. Some of the boards were 14" wide, and of course, all quarter sawn. They come wet from the veneer mill, so kiln drying is still required. He only did it one time, so can't help with a supplier.

Check on line for veneer mills. There may be one in your area where you can find some of the left overs. Just a thought.
