Variable speed for Jet Mini?

Can I use the variable router speed control from Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=43060) to make my Jet mini lathe a variable speed? Would this work or not?

No, they are only for universal motors!

Also most of these speed reducers are glorified dimmers used for lights, except they are more heavy duty with a bigger heat sink. They will however slow a motor down and will also reduce the HP dramatically. Thats why a trure speed drive costs so much money.
