Am in the process of making a Baron fountain pen. The wood I have is only 5/8 square, so I knew it would be close. But hey, I'm using one of those vises from uh, uh,.... anyway[:p] Here is a couple of pics so far. It's fun to prove the concept, even if it is a little after the fact!

With the hardware in the hole.
Can't wait to get it turned!

It's clearly been a while for him, Cav. Um, Paul, you do know that the hardware goes in AFTER you've turned the blank, right?

Paul

With your vise, I can easily drill 3/4" square blanks for gents and emperors, 5/8" square blanks for barons and jr gents, and 3/8" square blanks for slimlines. Your design is excellent!

Hope we get to see the finished product. Can't wait to get my vise and pen press so I can attempt something like that. I take it the glue and tube add some strength to it as there doesn't look to be much left to turn. Kinda fun living on the edge eh? [8D] This is a great group and I learn a new tip or trick daily. Thanks for sharing!!!

Chris

Amen to that as I just drilled a Irish Bog Oak that was a hair less than 3/4(.742) for an Emperor and it was perfect[:p].

Awh shucks, guys. I appreciate the compliments. But it is fun to experience the excitement for myself sometimes[:D] Don't think I've tried 3/8 for slimlines yet, did some around .41 one time though.

I've already PM'd my thanks and appreciation to Paul. I just used the one I got from him and realized all those scraps by my bandsaw were no longer scraps but blanks I hadn't prepped yet.

My older brother was visiting from Oregon a couple of weeks ago. He is an attorney and he really enjoys fountain pens. He wanted to watch me make him a Churchill with the Tiger Myrtle I purchased a couple of months back from an IAP member. The myrtle was only 3/4, so I had to drill it perfectly. Paul's vice really did the job.

It's really a great vice/tool to have for this hobby/business.

Best,
Roger Garrett
