Unknown wood

This is a blank that I pulled out of the $1 bin at PSI. It certainly didn't look like this in the blank state. You can't tell from the photos, but the wood color is purple. I thought it was Purpleheart, but the wood didn't get darker as I turned it like other Purpleheart has. Now I'm not sure what it is. The pen is a chrome designer. If only I had known how it would have turned out, I would used a higher end kit. Does anyone know what specied of wood it is? All comments welcomed, thanks for looking.

Looks like purple dyed stabilized maple or box elder.

Agree with Jason, I was thinking dyed maple burl. The $1 bin has some nice finds!

I'm guessing a dyed burl as well from what I can see. Unfortunately I can see the wood well enough to make any specific guess, but the lighter tones would indicate something the in Maple or Boxelder range of lighter colored woods.

Wow. Good deal for $1. Wish Woodcraft had a $1 bin.
