So there I was, at my weekly farmers market, marketing my turnings, as well as some fresh eggs, when a customer who a few weeks ago bought my most expensive bowl to date walks up with her husband. (she had actually bought two bowls that day) He hands me a nice piece of 5/4 santos mahogany about 14"x21". I've never handled santos, and it is pretty dense! I did some research, and found that it's not a true mahogony, but it has the same ribbon characteristics as African, but it's a bit darker, and much more dense. These people just wanted to see what I'd do with it! Didn't ask for money, discount on a bowl, anything, just wanted to see the finished product. I'm working on a nice stationary box with it now. This stuff smells extremely sweet when you cut it. I think I may have found another favorite wood to add to my list! I'm gonna call my local exotic lumber dealer and see what kind of price I can get for some 4/4 or better lumber.
Anyone else done anything with Santos Mahogany?
