I have had this in the corner for some time wondering what to put on it and going over all the photo's here did not help much but only made me more hesitant to use it.
I have some ebony blanks and used that. the problem I ran into is not so much with the wood but with the camera. there is serious detail within the wood that is not picked up by the camera.
One pitfall I had, I was doing the lower barrel and did not have the ends flush and like an idiot I pressed the parts on, so i had to disassemble it then repress them, in doing so the lower barrel cracked on me so I had to redo it. this is the OLD one.
but it did make a nice blank
