Doubtless many have looked at a piece of wood destined for the fireplace and discovered something else.This was very much uglier in person than the photos show, but on being cut it looked interesting depite decay and worm infestation. On recovering some it I turned a trial pen with it also trying out a kit I'm not so sure I like.
One is cocobolo(left) the other is from the ugly lump of unknown .

I wonder the same thing. I buy all of my blanks, for now. I find with the plastics the pen inside doesn't look like the outside.

I have found the uglier the wood looks the better it is for pens. Seems like you get more character. I've even used stuff that was burnt black. Of course it was pine burl that started on fire in my wife's toaster oven. šŸ˜†
