But I do love woods with contrasting sapwood. Looking forward to seeing your pen!

you don't have the only piece. I bought a couple small pieces of 50/50 sapwood at Rockler a couple of weeks ago. Looks pretty neat haven't had a chance to cut it into blanks yet though. Perhaps this weekend or tomorrow. I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I have a board in my shop with stripes of light and dark wood. I have milled some pieces for a box. I will post pictures of the box when finished.

I found this board at my suppliers store. The owner a $1 per board foot off the price because it had so much sap wood. It was 9bf when I bought it. (I did not tell him I choose the board because of the sap wood.)

By the way, of over 1000bf of Padauk in his bin, it was the only piece with sap wood. So I would still call it rare.

I have a pic of the board on my computer at home. I will edit and post it later this evening.

Here is an in process picture of the box and a picture of a section of the remaining board. (No the shelf in the backgroud is not leaning. I took the picture from the side to get enough light.)

Here's a couple of pics of some blanks that were labelled as Pradauk (not a mispelling on my part). There is a wood called
Pradauk but I haven't been able to find a pic of it with the
stripes.

It certainly turned like Cocobolo and smelled like it as well, but I didn't get near the reaction in my eyes that I did with Cocobolo.

PSI sells Tiger Pradouk. From the limited research I've done, its not a member of the Padouk family.

here's the link http://www.pennstateind.com/store/WXPR16X.html

Padouk with sapwood is as common as African Blackwood or Walnut with sap. All of these trees have a cream colored sap wood and colored heartwood along with many others including Purpleheart and Cherry. Now you don't see much of it sold as people are mainly interested in the colored sapwood, but if you can find a mill that is cutting the timber you can get all you want.
